Structural & Drywall Metal Stud Prices - US Frame Factory

Metal stud prices are on the rise as of November 2023. Steel mills that have reopened after a maintenance period are securing higher rates for deliveries in December and January. Prominent metal stud manufacturers, such as ClarkDietrich and Super Stud, have announced price increases. At US Frame Factory, we have found it necessary to increase our prices by 5%. Some of this price increase can be attributed to the anticipated resolution of the auto union strike in the near future, which is expected to lead to an increase in demand. Those who are enterprising enough may discover good deals by exploring the option of importing steel from countries like Brazil, Korea, and China.

What is the difference between structural and non structural metal studs?

  • Structural studs are made thicker gauges ranging from 18 to 10 gauge(43 mils to 118 mils). The standard flange size for the structural studs is 1-5/8″. This allows them to carry structural and environmental loads.
  • Non-structural studs also known as interior drywall metal studs. They’re primarily used for handing drywall in interiors. These are far thinner with thicknesses ranging from 23 mils to 15 mils, so 24 gauge to 28 gauge in thickness. Often these studs have EQ thicknesses also known as “Equivalent gauge.”
  • Drywall studs have a flange size of 1-1/4″. A typical structural stud product code would be 600S162-43 while a drywall stud code could be 362S125-23.

Metal stud framing vs Traditional Wood Framing Costs

As of September 2023, a 2-inch by 6-inch by 20-foot pressure-treated piece of structural wooden framing is priced at approximately $20.48, while a comparable 20-foot, 18-gauge metal stud costs $34.20. If you’re seeking a higher quality option, now might be an opportune moment to consider constructing a metal house. Currently, wood is available at a roughly 40% lower cost, even when employing pre-cut materials. However, labor expenses for metal framing are likely to be 10-20% higher. Metal becomes a more competitive choice when used in a prefabricated manner, such as in the assembly of wall panels, enabling house construction at less than $100 per square foot. Nevertheless, wood continues to provide a more economical initial construction cost when it is a suitable option. It is both cheaper and more user-friendly, although it is susceptible to fire, rot, pests, warping, and shrinkage. Conversely, metal is more straight, uniform, and resistant to rot, but it comes at a higher cost and presents greater challenges during the construction process.
