Skylights Buying Guide
While shaftless skylights are available for steep roofs where the ceiling is connected directly to the rafters, some homes may require a shaft for the proper installation of a skylight. • Flared - longer at the base of the opening to allow light into the room for a longer period of time and provide better ventilation around the skylight • Straight - ideal for rooms with small ceilings or roofs with obstacles (chimneys, satellite dishes, etc.)

A variety of glazings are also available. Glazings (also known as glass options) can have an impact on the skylight's energy efficiency, and some can even help your skylight withstand snow loads. Different brands offer different kinds of glazing. In general, you always want to choose the glass with the highest efficiency available, but that will depend on the application. Low-emissive (low-e) glass offers the highest insulating value and lower solar heat gain. Skylights with low-e glass are recommended for living spaces.

• Single Glaze provides basic insulation against heat, cold, and sound. These are not recommended in living spaces.
• Double Glaze creates a mechanically sealed airspace for acrylic and Lexan skylights. It reduces outside noise while increasing energy efficiency.
• Insulated Glass creates a hermetically sealed airspace for glass skylights. Great for energy efficiency and protection against the elements, insulated glass should be low-e for better energy efficiency. Laminated glass is also available for extra UV protection.
Once you have chosen a skylight or roof window, talk to a Menards® Team Member about what kind of flashing kit you will need. Some skylights are self-flashing, but in most cases, you will have to purchase the flashing separately to ensure that the skylight conforms to the manufacturer's warranties and product performance. Be sure to check roof pitch requirements for the model you choose to make sure it's compatible with the roof pitch that the skylight will be installed on.
How to Choose Windows, Doors & Skylights
Buying a Window, Door or Skylight.
Choosing the right window, door or skylight can be a complex process with lots of variables and information to sort through. Not only is there curb appeal to consider, but maintenance and energy efficiency are important for your well being.
If your window replacement is for a Southern exposure you may want to consider an ENERGY STAR® rated product with Low-E glazing. On the other hand a Western facing front door without an overhang is going to be punished by the elements and require regular maintenance. And these are just a few of the things you’ll consider prior to making a purchase.
With that in mind, we’ve asked our experts and put together some of the best advice on buying a window, door or skylight.
