China Engines Going The Distance
China Engines Going The Distance
Re: China engines going the distance
Lash adjustment is something I perform based on feel. These engines expand as they heat up, so the key is to find where they are the tightest and avoid closing up on that area. The recommended specification for this is around .003 to .005 inches when cold.
Lifters must rotate properly; if they don't, the cam lobes will wear unevenly, and the lash will change unless constantly monitored. The first indication of trouble will likely be difficult starting, as the compression release becomes ineffective. There are various reasons why lifters might not turn, such as being improperly ground or too soft, or issues occurring during break-in. Unfortunately, this issue can't be fixed easily unless you have a spare cam or lifters. Keep in mind that some cams from 208 and 212 blocks will not fit standard Honda blocks, so always measure before interchanging them.
Some Champions feature cast rockers on a shaft, while later versions utilize stamped steel. These can fit most Honda and clone heads of the same family, offering a more stable valve train. In my opinion, the cast version is even better than the Honda equivalent. Pushrods and lifters can vary in length in the GX160 through 210 clones. Mixing and matching parts is acceptable as long as you examine the valve train geometry and select parts that sweep across the center of the lash cap at 50% lift. With spare parts from various clones, you can enhance durability by using the exhaust lash cap and retainer on the intake of your modified clone.
When rebuilding a clone engine, it's often beneficial to swap out the best parts from scrap engines, but you need to be cautious. Kohler clones feature a taper that differs from Honda or standard clones, although it does match the taper on a Harbor Freight 212 predator. This means you can't use a Honda ring gear flywheel on those engines or their respective lighting kits.
In 208 clones, the wrist pin won't fit a Honda/clone rod, but 212 cc engines do use the same wrist pin, allowing predator pistons to be used in the 208 block with a regular rod. Always test fit and measure to ensure compatibility, but if it bolts in, you likely won't encounter issues. The distance from the wrist pin to the crown is shorter in 212 engines to adjust for stroke differences.
Essentially, there's only one Honda piston you'll need for all 68mm clones: the Honda Z4M piston. This piston fits all stroke combinations and, being a flat top, slightly increases compression on some engines, though not enough to cause problems. If you do encounter any issues, the .040 GX160 head gasket can be used as a solution. For other applications, I typically use the .009 GX200 gasket because it's reusable.

Can I trust this seal to be OEM as advertised? I've attached a picture of the way it arrived. There was no packing slip from a Toyota dealer like most of my previous Amazon orders that claimed to be Toyota OEM. It arrived only in a clear ziplock-style bag. I’ve taken the best picture I could of the seal.
It is marked with: NOK 10.1 BG3657E
