This is the first installment in a three-part series focusing on the Research & Development (R&D) phase of contract manufacturing and what you should anticipate from your manufacturer.
Understanding Private Label Services
Before diving into contract manufacturing, it’s essential to understand what each term means and the benefits each type of service offers when creating your custom skincare line.
- Private Label Manufacturing – our product, your packaging: The quickest and most cost-effective way to introduce your product to the market is by selecting one of our ready-to-use products or raw materials. We will fill your containers, label them, assemble kits, and ship them to your warehouse, Amazon, or another fulfillment center. For bulk orders, you can order directly from our website at any time.
- Semi-custom Manufacturing – tailored: If you need something slightly different from our current offerings, we can customize our stock products in our lab by adding essential oils, altering carrier oils or butters, using different additives, or making similar modifications. We can supply your semi-custom product in bulk, or fill, label, kit, and ship in your packaging.
- Custom Formulation: If you need a unique product for your business, you can contract with us to create a custom formula from scratch in our lab. We can also ship your product in bulk, or fill, label, kit, and ship to your distribution center.
- Contract Manufacturing of your formula: If you already have a formula, we can replicate it in our lab and manufacture it for you. We can provide your product in bulk, or fill, label, kit, and ship to your distribution center.
Creating a Custom Skincare Formula Requires Time
Developing a custom skincare product from scratch is time-consuming. If you rush through the process, you might end up with a product that separates, loses its color, damages its packaging, grows mold, or fails to satisfy your customers. Only time will give you the confidence that your product will perform well in the market, so please be patient.
Stage One: Research and Development – 30 TO 360 DAYS
Though it may seem excessive, a window of 30 to 360 days is actually necessary for the research and development phase. This phase blends art with science and forms the foundation of your product's success. Hiring a lab to create a formula involves multiple iterations to achieve the desired result, which could take 20 or more versions.
Sometimes we get it right on the first try, other times products fail during testing and never reach you. Some products may look perfect initially, but fail over time, showing issues like color fading or oil separation. The initial formulation process is unpredictable, especially with natural and organic products, which can react differently based on specific conditions.
Discovery Calls
Before lab work begins, it’s crucial to have one or more calls with the formulator working on your project. An account manager will be involved, but direct conversations with the lab ensure they understand your vision and can address specific concerns and ingredient choices directly. This step is essential for products created from scratch or custom formulations.
Selecting your Packaging
Choosing your packaging early is important to test samples appropriately. The viscosity of your product, the functionality of the dispenser, and the durability of the packaging in various conditions should all be assessed during this phase. Providing your chosen packaging to the lab ensures accurate sample testing.
Sample Evaluation Process
Lab samples that pass internal review are sent to you for evaluation, accompanied by an evaluation form and unique product identification numbers for tracking. Feedback on these samples leads to refinements until you have an approved version ready for market testing and validation.
Market Testing
Your approval doesn't guarantee market success; real-world feedback is crucial. Distributing samples to testers or brand ambassadors helps validate the product, ensuring it meets market expectations. This feedback is critical in refining the final product.

Key Questions to Ask When Ordering Custom Lotion Bottle Supplier
Explaining Child-Resistant Packaging
One customer faced significant returns and lost sales because she did not test her product with future customers. Building in time to test with a small group of customers is pivotal for your product’s success. You might need to invest in a minimum run of packaging, but the feedback from testers will be invaluable.
Approved for Production
Once your formula is finalized, move into the production planning phase. This stage transitions from R&D to Pre-Production, involving ingredient verification and preparation for large-scale production. Market research-backed confidence ensures your product is ready for success.
Moving into Production
The next article in this series will cover the production phases, including third-party stability testing, quality control, and benchmarking to ensure your product is packaged and labeled as intended. The final part will discuss distribution and logistics for a successful market launch.
We hope this clarifies the process of working with a private label or contract manufacturer. Feel free to leave questions in the comments section below!
