Game Review: Lawn Mowing Simulator

Feeling fortunate, I often receive games for free as a part of running this blog. When a game is up for review, I sometimes find a review code waiting for me without prior request. It’s a pleasant surprise as I’ve stumbled upon some hidden gems through such unsolicited offers. Yet, more often than not, I request review codes for games I’ve researched based on press releases, trailers, and updates. Occasionally, I make a request based solely on the game’s title, and that’s precisely the case here.

Developed by Skyhook Games and published by Curve Digital, Lawn Mowing Simulator is exactly what the title suggests. Simulator games typically fall into two categories: the wildly entertaining, over-the-top experiences like Goat Simulator or the earnest attempts at realism such as Microsoft Flight Simulator. This game belongs to the latter group, transforming the mundane task of lawn mowing into an engaging video game experience, complete with real-world mowing equipment.

Interestingly enough, The Simpsons already tackled this theme. Just recently, my partner noted the overgrown state of our lawn and questioned if I would mow it. I had to explain that my time today was consumed by reviewing a game centered on mowing, which didn’t exactly please her. This isn't my first encounter with lawn mowing games; I fondly remember playing Jeff Minter’s Hover Bovver on my Commodore 64. With a background in lawn mowing video games, I feel well-equipped for this review.

First on the agenda is the graphics. Lawn Mowing Simulator is genuinely impressive. Set in the picturesque English countryside, players can experience various locations. In one job, you might find yourself manicuring a typical home lawn, while in another, you could be sprucing up the grounds of a historical castle. Each lawn presents a unique set of challenges, featuring distinct shapes and obstacles. The environments are rich in detail, with lush grass swaying in the breeze, adorned gardens, and animated background characters. Given the game’s primary focus on landscaping, the level of detail created in the environments is quite remarkable.

The mowers, a total of twelve, are convincingly realistic. Though I’m not an expert on lawnmowers, I’ve done my homework, and these in-game machines align closely with their real-world equivalents. Each mower delivers a unique experience, echoing the sounds and movements one would expect from actual equipment. The physics are well-executed, with the whirring blades creating realistic air dynamics.

Now, let’s talk about the gameplay. Lawn Mowing Simulator offers three game modes. The Challenge mode tasks you with completing jobs under specific conditions, whether it's timing or fuel restrictions. Alternatively, there's a free-mow mode, where you can select a lawn and a mower without any limitations. However, the most engaging aspect comes from the career mode, which requires deeper exploration and explanation.

Career mode is more than just enhancing lawns; it immerses you in building your mowing business. You begin by creating an avatar and setting up your company, complete with a name, color scheme, and logo. You’ll then accept jobs from clients, each with their unique requirements—some may want you to leave grass clippings, while others prefer them removed. This aspect of gameplay is where selecting the right mower becomes crucial, as each has unique attributes and functions. Before mowing, you must inspect the lawn to ensure it’s free of debris that could harm your equipment. Once ready, you’ll hop on your mower, adjust the throttle, and set the cutting height before getting to work.

Driving over the grass is straightforward, but you'll need to be cautious. Damage to your mower or the client’s garden could result in monetary penalties, eating into your profits. I found myself grappling with the mechanics, especially during turns, where carelessness could lead to significant setbacks.

As I attempted to maneuver the mower, I realized that any damage incurred would need to be covered out of my earnings. Speaking of which, you can utilize your profits to acquire better mowers and upgrade your existing ones, or even invest in a new headquarters for your business. As your reputation grows, you can begin taking on more challenging jobs. However, with just one person and one mower, you can’t accept every job that comes your way, which introduces the element of hiring staff. You have various options, from seasoned pros to inexperienced newbies, and their wages vary accordingly. Careful financial management is critical to your success.

To satisfy your clients, you must meet specific requests and maximize how much grass you mow—aiming for a daunting 99.5%. While you can complete a job with minimal effort, it won’t earn you significant money. Accomplishing that final percentage can be quite tedious, as even the smallest patch can fall within that category. Thankfully, the ProVision feature highlights uncut patches but can only be used while stationary, complicating the time constraints associated with client jobs.

As your reputation increases, your clientele will mature, leading to more high-profile jobs with better rewards. On top of that, if a client requests a striped lawn design, you’re capable of delivering that too, assuming you have the correct mower upgrade installed.

At this point in the review, I should confess my original intention was to mock Lawn Mowing Simulator and, by extension, the simulator genre as a whole. I’ve dabbled in various titles like Train Simulator and Farming Simulator, often finding them tedious. However, my experience with this game has changed my outlook completely.

To my surprise, I genuinely enjoy Lawn Mowing Simulator. The developers at Skyhook Games have crafted a captivating and enjoyable simulation that offers more than mere lawn cutting; the career mode is engrossing. Building a landscaping business from scratch is rewarding, and there's something incredibly satisfying about efficiently managing operations. As I mowed lawns, I found the ambient sounds of the English countryside soothing, and I felt a genuine commitment to providing quality service to my clients. The sarcastic tone I planned for my review has, quite unexpectedly, given way to honest praise.

Additionally, I learned quite a bit about lawnmowers as I explored their specs to ensure proper selection for each job. I developed a newfound appreciation for the mechanics behind lawn care, channeling my inner Hank Hill with every mowing decision!

The game is available for just £24.99, and I highly recommend Lawn Mowing Simulator. Beyond the enjoyment of mowing itself, the business management aspect is utterly engrossing. From building your business to hiring staff and upgrading your equipment, the game offers a wealth of opportunities for growth. What started as a lighthearted review turned into an authentic endorsement for a game I’ve come to love. Skyhook Games has successfully turned this skeptical reviewer into a fan by producing an experience well worth your time.
