How To Cut And Bend Standing Seam Metal Roofing Panels

Getting ready to install a standing seam metal roof? You&#;ll need to know how to cut and bend the panels. Luckily, you&#;re in the right place!

For more information, please visit metal roof sheet bending machine.

This article is a step by step guide on how to correctly cut and bend standing seam panels. You can also use the written instructions to follow along with our video below.

Marking and Cutting Your Standing Seam Panel

In most installations, you&#;ll need to cut the last panel down. For this example, we will cut a 18&#; panel down to 11&#;.

To cut down your standing seam panel:

  1. Make your first mark at 11&#; for a fold line.

  2. Make a second mark at an additional 1 ¾&#; for the cut line.

      3. Do the same procedure on the opposite side of the panel.

      4. Chalk or trace a line across the cut mark depending on the size of your panel. TIP: Only make your cut               line mark initially to help prevent cutting mistakes when multiple installers are on a site.

      5. Take your double cuts and align the blade to the left or the right side of the mark.

       6. Cut through your panel.

Folding A Standing Seam Panel With A Roller Bender

Now that we have our cut, it&#;s time to create the fold line on the panel.

  1. Mark your fold line on your panel just like you marked your cut line above.

  2. Make a small notch on the fold line to help the panel bend easier.

  3. Take a roller bender and set it at 1 ¾&#; depth and double-check with your tape measure.

      4. Flip over the panel.

      5. Run the three wheels down and the single wheel up. TIP: Avoid one-wheeled roller benders as they                    don&#;t stay square on the panel.

      6. Set your roller bender on your depth and roll the panel.

      7. Start with a slight crease and gradually bend as you go TIP: Clamp the panel down or have an assistant            secure it to make the bending process easier.

     8. After using the roller bender, additional adjustments can be made using your hand seamer or by hand to           get it to a straight 90 degrees.

can I bend a hem in a standing seam metal roof without ...

I have never done a standing seam roof before.

I am building a sq ft workshop.

I thought a standing seam roof was out of my budget &#; and it is if I have a contractor install it.

They I found a standing seam roof that can go over purlins &#;.. $7K to sheet the roof &#; $ if I put 2 x 4&#;s every 24&#; &#;.. that brings the metal roof in line with a standard shingle roof.

I found roofing that is snap lock so I don&#;t need to worry about a machine to seal the seams.

My only issue it the two long seams at the start and finish of the roof &#; a 37 ft long hem!

I watched all the videos &#; looks like they use a rolling bender to get the 90 &#; then a disc bender to get it over the rest of the way.

There tools are expensive and once I do the 4 hemmed edges, I will not need them again.

I called a few rental places &#; no one has one to rent.

I looked on ebay and facebook marketplace &#; no cheap version of the tools and no used ones for sale.

So, my question, can I make this bend any other way?

I thought about using the 18&#; bender I will need at the bottom of each panel and going along with it but I was worried it would leave a mark at the end every time I move it.

Here is a link to some videos of he project of youtube: workshop videos

Here is a link to a post I put up yesterday showing the shop: facebook post

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Mike
