Static Shielding vs. Anti-Static Bags

The problematic terminology around anti-static, static-shielding, and static dissipative bags creates confusion among buyers. The lack of understanding of what each means might lead to choosing the wrong packaging for our products, resulting in failures or damages. It is critical to know that these terms are not the same and should not be observed as such.

Static shielding bags have anti-static properties that stop the static electricity buildup and protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD). Static shielding bags consist of multi-layer materials that create a Faraday cage capable of protecting components from ESD. However, they should not be confused with what we call anti-static bags. Unlike anti-static packaging, static shielding bags safeguard components both inside and outside the bag.

The right packaging choice will depend on your specific needs and purposes. Electronic components such as circuit boards, sound cards, and hard drives must be packaged in bags made of static shielding material. On the other hand, you may consider anti-static poly bags when you are not shipping or storing electronic items prone to damage by static.

Static Shielding vs Anti-Static: What's the Difference?

The terms &#;static shielding&#; and &#;anti-static&#; seem to be interchanged everywhere. Even Wikipedia offers the terms up as close synonyms, but there are huge differences between static shielding and and anti-static materials. They are not the same thing, and should not be treated as such.

Static shielding bags prevent the build up of static electricity (meaning they have anti-static properties), but they ALSO protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD). These multi-layer materials create a Faraday Cage protecting components from ESD. The inner layer is a static dissipative polyethylene surrounded by a layer of aluminum shielding. The next layer is made of polyester, with an outer layer made of a static dissipative coating. Unlike anti-static bags, static shielding bags protect components from static charges both inside and outside of the bag. In order to provide ESD protection, material is fashioned into a bag or enclosure of some sort and products are sealed inside the bag. No seal, no guarantee of protection. And be sure to pad sharp components and don&#;t use staples. They can compromise the static shielding properties of the bags.

Another class of static shielding bags are moisture vapor barrier (MVB) shielding bags.  These materials shield from electromagnetic interference (EMI) as well as radio frequency interference (RFI) and static. This is mainly accomplished by using a much thicker metal layer, inhibiting the moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) by a factor of over 20 times more compared to ordinary shielding bags.

Anti-static materials, on the other hand, ONLY prevent the build up of static electricity. The material itself will not generate or hold a triboelectric charge, so it will not be a carrier that introduces static into a static controlled environment. These materials DO NOT protect from electrostatic discharge (ESD).   Anti-static bags and materials are ideal for packaging non-static sensitive parts used in electronics manufacturing, like nuts and bolts or manuals. Many people think of pink polyethylene bags when they think of anti-static bags. Pink poly anti-static bags should never be used as the only packaging to protect electronic components from electrostatic discharge.

So what do you need? It depends on your products and where you are sending them. The US military requires all electronic components (circuit boards, hard drives, sound cards, etc) to be packaged in materials that meet the stringent specifications of MIL-PRF-, which is a static shielding material. If you are not shipping or storing electronic components or items that can be damaged by static, but your products may be shipped to an area that is static controlled, you can get by with the pink poly, anti-static material.

Call to order ESD bags with anti-static AND static shielding properties at 1-800-644-, or order rolls of ESD material online.

We have noticed products claiming to be MIL-PRF- that are not certified to this MIL SPEC. Be sure to always check product documentation and the government maintained Qualified Product List for MIL-PRF- to make sure you are using material that meets the standards for your military packaging project.
