Biodegradable rice paper coffee bags: Storage tips
Paper-based packaging is one of the oldest forms of food and product packaging. Although plastic packaging has dominated the market over the last few decades, the tide is once again turning. Research shows that the global paper and paperboard container and packaging market size is poised to reach $463.3 billion by . Kraft paper and rice paper are two paper-based packaging materials commonly used by specialty coffee roasters.
Biodegradable rice paper bags are one of the most eco-friendly options brands can invest in. However, when left untreated or unlined, the qualities that make rice paper compostable or biodegradable can actually accelerate coffee ageing, ultimately making it unpleasant to drink. Many also wonder how biodegradable rice paper coffee bags hold up during transport and over long-term storage.
To learn more, I spoke to Ben Sibley of Assembly Coffee, UK. He shares his thoughts on the durability of rice paper in various environmental conditions, its protective qualities, and the potential costs associated with adopting such packaging.

Tips for storing biodegradable rice paper coffee bags
In normal conditions, compostable and biodegradable coffee packaging is chemically inactive and will not degrade spontaneously. The decomposition process requires a combination of very specific conditions, which include:
- An anaerobic environment: Anaerobic digestion converts biodegradable materials into energy-rich biogas.
- Humidity levels: Conditions such as moisture content, temperature, and pH levels are carefully controlled to achieve a faster and more complete breakdown of materials.
- Micro-organisms: Various organisms and bacteria need to be present to break down the materials into a nutrient-rich mass.
Essentially, it is unlikely that biodegradable rice paper coffee bags will break down unless the above conditions are met. It is recommended that, when storing biodegradable coffee packaging, brands keep it:
- In its original packaging.
- Away from direct sunlight or sources of heat.
- In areas of low humidity, ideally between 17ºC and 25ºC (62.6ºF and 77ºF).
The benefits of investing in biodegradable rice paper coffee bags
Rice paper coffee bags are becoming more popular because of their sustainability, flexibility, and customisation options. Despite its name, rice paper for packaging is actually produced from renewable and bio-based sources like quintan bark and bamboo. These particular raw materials are fairly low-maintenance, so they dont consume large volumes of natural resources or have a significant negative impact on the environment.

Rice paper is flexible and strong but somewhat translucent as a packaging material. When used to package coffee, its often layered to make it more opaque and enhance its strength and protective qualities. Its also frequently lined with aluminium to further protect the coffee from moisture, UV rays, and oxidation, but this drastically reduces its recycling potential.
Assembly Coffee has stores across Londons most well-coffee-versed boroughs and caters to an entire wholesale market. Ben has worked as a brand manager for over two years and explains the Assemblys choice to invest in rice paper coffee bags.
Coffee is historically interpreted as strict and sometimes quite sterile, he says. We were looking for a material that could feel refined and premium but also offered texture, transparency, and a reminder of coffees connection to the natural worldthat its handmade, perishable, and [essentially,] a food product.
He adds that the brand partnered with MTPak Coffee to create rice paper coffee bags backed with a food-safe lining. These bags achieve the structural integrity we desired for both brand and function, but we felt the frayed threads and organic texture perfectly achieved this other aspect we wanted to incorporate.
Meeting sustainability goals with biodegradable rice paper coffee bags
The majority of the market is made up of eco-conscious consumers who may find rice paper coffee bags perfectly suited to their needs. According to recent data, 78% of consumers consider sustainability to be important. Additionally, around 55% of consumers are willing to pay a premium to support eco-friendly brands. Therefore, rice paper coffee bags should be considered to meet consumers sustainability needs.
Rice paper coffee bags are lightweight, which means they often come with lower shipping costs. Rice paper itself is a well-known biodegradable and compostable material. They also offer a unique, natural look, which effortlessly enhances branding and product appeal, bringing consumers back to the coffee beans natural roots.
Its easy to make a box or jar feel premium, and its easy to create a packaging system that links to traditional queues of luxury, says Ben. In our experience, however, this inhibits the rate of retail sales. This is the insight we were working on and wanted to make as clear as possible, using the transparency of rice paper and the dimensions of a regular coffee bag to highlight that the product is coffee and not garments, electronics, or cosmetics. The result is that both online and offline, weve seen a definite increase in the rate of sales.
