alkaline resistant fiberglass tape vs. regular fiberglass tape
Hi,
Today I visited my friend and noticed that his sub-contractor used regular fiberglass tape (Duroc?) to tape between cement boards. Actually, tomorrow his sub-contractor is scheduled to start tiling.
I know that everyone recommends alkaline resistant fiberglass tape.
Is it a serious problem?
How to rectify if it is a problem?
I did not discuss the issue with friend yet- just do not want to scare him if there is no a problem.
Regards, Andre

Andre,
The regular tape will just not hold up to the alkalinity like the "Alkaline Resistant" tape will...
The two look similar - how do you know it's not the correct tape??

Like Frank said, it won't hold up. It will eventually break down and compromise the joints. Any way you can find out for sure what tape was used?

Hi,
Thank you for your answers.
I called to confirm what tape was used.
There is a label on unfinished roll of fiberglass tape.
It is "Fiberglass Drywall Tape, Sheetrock".
Seems like "we have a problem... ".
Please advise if it is fixable and how.
For now, I am still keeping it in low profile mode.

If you are looking for more details, kindly visit Alkali Resistant Fiberglass Mesh Tape.
Do you know if they used thinset or drywall mud on the tape? Either way it would need to come off and be replaced with the proper tape and thinset. The tile guy could install the new tape as he tiles. It doesn't have to go on or even dry beforehand.

Hi,
Soryy I missed to mention, it looks like that: the gaps were filled with a thinset, fiberglass tape installed and another layer of thinset aplied over it (cement boards on shower walls).
Now, before I started trouble, please confirm: the tape shall be removed (how? any advise?) and be replaced by alkaline resistant tape.
Is there any other way?
I have to be sure before I bring bad news. Well, at least messenger will survive this time, or may be not...
Regards, Andrey

You may be okay, depending on the tape, most alkali resistant tapes are fiberglass with one of the following coatings, acrylic acid, macromolecule,or polypropolyne.
